Natural Disasters have been keeping the Disaster Recovery Team busy in our region. They have been providing support to the Austin Diocese Council with the West, TX Fertilizer explosion, and to Council of Ft. Worth with tornados in Granbury and surrounding areas, and the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City with two F5 tornados. They organize the relief efforts and bring in Case Workers to train volunteers to assist those in need and co-ordinate with the other organizations involved such as Catholic Charities, Knights of Columbus, Ladies of Charity and other charitable organizations. During the Hurricane Katrina relief operations they developed a concept they named “House in a Box”. The concept is to provide new household items for families who have lost everything as a result of natural disasters and who are as a result being forced into situational poverty. This gives dignity to families in crisis as it gives them a new and fresh start. All families receive the same items which are packaged for efficiency of delivery. The program is scalable to the size of the family. The House in a Box items:
Cost is $1440 for a family of 4 (based on bulk purchase discounts)
There were about 13,000 homes damagaed in the Oklahoma tornados. Financial donations are needed to complete this distribution.
